First Lunch
[furst luhnch] / fɜrst lʌntʃ /
noun
the first segment of Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart Upper School’s lunch period, resulting from the staggering of lunch line timing
“Do we have First Lunch today?”
The term “First Lunch” skyrocketed in popularity this year with the division of lunch line timing to tackle the issue of long wait times and disorganized lines. First Lunch begins at 11:25 AM, and students who have the coveted First Lunch spot are allowed to line up and begin getting their lunch at that time. Second Lunch follows first, and originally referred to the segment of lunch from 12:00 to 12:25 PM. But, since the division of lunch timing, it has begun to refer to the second lunch line segment, where students begin getting their lunch at 11:35 AM.
“First Lunch” quickly became a staple in Stone Ridge Upper School Students’ vocabulary, and is used every day. Popular phrases including the term are “Do we have First Lunch today?”, “We’d better be First Lunch today”, and “I’m not even going if we’re not First Lunch.” As shown by these examples, the term has developed to be not only something one can have, but also a state of being, to categorize a group of people.
Along with the popularization of this term have come disagreements and conflict. Some students are upset with the division of lunch timing and how it rotates who gets the coveted First Lunch spot. The term surges in popularity on favorite lunch days, such as ramen bar, chipotle bowls, pasta, and general Tso’s chicken.
